Within many articles, you will see organs of the
body beginning with a capital letter, i.e., Liver, Spleen, Heart,
Lungs, etc.
Within the Chinese Pin Yin alphabet, these organs
have names such as Gan (Liver), Pi (Spleen), Xin (Heart) and Fei
(Lungs). For sake of clarification, I have referred to their English
name equivalent, but given them a capital letter to avoid confusion
with conventional western medial names.
Although there is some overlap between Western
and Eastern medicine, they are two different medical systems. For
example, the kidneys in Western medicine are primarily regarded
as a filter, whereas in Chinese medicine the Kidneys are regarded
as the root of all Yin & Yang energies and play a fundamental
role in conception, pregnancy, growth and development. Occasionally
the Kidneys are referred to as the Kidney-Adrenal complex in Chinese
medical texts, which perhaps is a more description term from a Western
point of view.
